Matthew McConaughey may have branched out into a lot of oddball film and TV roles in recent years. However, the actor still makes a lot of cashola from some of the projects earlier in his career, namely of the rom-com variety. He revealed in an interview that it is actually How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days that still leads to the most checks in the mail. Per McConaughey:
So How to Lose a Guy, you mentioned earlier how much its on. That film has been my greatest mailbox money of any film. It is always on and theres always this great little check that shows up in the mail from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I did that however many years ago!
This quote from Serenitys Matthew McConaughey is really revealing. When we think about actors salaries, we often think about the initial payout an actor gets for filming a movie. Sometimes we may even think of additional brand ambassadorships and ads that add to the cume total of an actors wealth. But its less often that we think about residual checks for movies that are still making money through home entertainment forums.
While speaking out to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Matthew McConaughey also rated his rom-coms from best to worst. Unsurprisingly, hes pretty pumped about How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days due to the money it still earns him. Next, hes down with Failure to Launch.
Sadly, hes less excited about The Wedding Planner, the Jennifer Lopez comedy that features him falling in love with another woman when hes already engaged to be married. We get it. That brown m&ms scene though.
Its not surprising to me that rom-coms in general do well via DVD and Blu-ray sales, cable releases and even streaming. They are exactly the sort of movie that people will throw on over and over again on cable and streaming platforms. In fact, Matthew McConaughey previously revealed he was loving the part of his career where he kept churning out rom-coms, that is, until he realized it was slowing his ambition and drive in the industry.
Actors receive residual checks for movies and TV shows all the time. If you are in a popular movie or TV project, you could earn more many than you think. Last year, a Titanic actor who has one line in the movie revealed he still makes $200- $300 in residuals from the movie. Former MLB Player Keith Hernandez, who appeared in several Seinfeld episodes still makes a whopping $3,000 a year from the heavily syndicated series.
So, Id assume How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days mailbox money is a pretty nice check to open up every once and awhile.
