There's been plenty of talk about a potential Man of Steel 2, but DC and Warner Bros. have yet to confirm in any official manner that a movie is in development. That hasn't stopped people from asking Henry Cavill about a sequel, with the actor expressing a desire to lead his own solo film again, but not confirming anything. Superman has no shortage of comic books stories that could make for an awesome movie, but if Cavill really had to pick, he'd want to adapt a comic book known as Superman: For Tomorrow.
But I can say, one of my favorite books is Superman: For Tomorrow. That one I think --- [you] could certainly draw some inspiration from that. I think it would make a really good movie.
Superman: For Tomorrow is a bit of an unusual pick for a favorite Superman story. Written by Brian Azzarello and drawn by Jim Lee, Superman: For Tomorrow is a 2004-2005 comic book story arc. The plot involved one million people on Earth suddenly vanishing without a trace Leftovers style, including Lois Lane. Superman blames himself for being unable to prevent the tragedy, and with a heavy heart must figure out what happened while carrying on his regular duties.
It's a pretty good look at how Superman personally feels responsible for innocent lives and the lengths he will go to save them. However, the story got mixed reviews when it came out and it involves a pretty convoluted plot. Let's just say that it has something to do with a parallel universe that Superman created but made himself forget, plus it has a whole side story about Superman doing confessionals with a priest who's going through his own drama.
All in all, the storyline isn't as iconic as some other Superman comics like Superman: All-Star or Kingdom Come, but it's definitely an interesting choice. Henry Cavill didn't elaborate on his Facebook Live why he thought the story arc would make for a great movie, but if it's one of his favorites then he must have a good reason. Cavill has previously said that he had an idea for Man of Steel 2 and that he wanted the villain to be Brainiac.
While there's not a lot of concrete details about a potential Man of Steel 2, there are plenty of rumors surrounding its development and the people involved. Matthew Vaughn is a popular name when it comes to potential directors and Christopher McQuarrie has popped up recently thanks to his recent work with Cavill on Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
