Although Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom may be soon extinct from theaters, behind-the-scenes footage is starting to pop up ahead of the upcoming Blu-ray release. The box office hit was full of animatronic dinosaurs and CGI wizardry as Owen and Claire journeyed back to the ruins of Jurassic World to rescue the remaining creatures who previously ran wild in the state-of-the-art park as an active volcano endangered their lives. In one thrilling sequence, the pair came across a T. Rex asleep in a shipping container. Take a look at how the scene was constructed using a puppeteering:
In the newly released bonus feature, co-writer and executive producer Colin Trevorrow revealed the scene was specifically orchestrated with the idea of using an animatronic T. Rex. The filmmakers were looking to use practical effects for the dinos in more scenarios then they had the chance to in the previous Jurassic World film. The franchise follows that of Jurassic Park films that famously implemented animatronic dinosaurs, allowing the actors to work with concrete set pieces instead of only tennis balls over green screen backdrops. As shown in the clip, the T. Rex could be puppeteered from the below and back in its laying position in the shipping crate, with different people manning the controls for components, including the eyes, breathing and jaw.
In the scene, Owen and Claire found themselves stuck in a shipping crate with the T. Rex which soon wakes from its slumber while Claire is on top of it, drawing blood from its neck. The video gives fans of the film an inside look on how Bryce Dallas Howard could sit atop its neck during the scene as a saddle and reigns were hidden into the design. The creature effects creative supervisor, Neal Scanlan, also shared the detail of adding in the slime in its mouth, which is necessary for making it look like it had been snoring and slobbering. The brief look into creating this scene looks like it was highly technical and took a lot of creativity to orchestrate. Chris Pratt recently revealed that his dive roll at the end of the scene as he barely escaped the sharp teeth of the T. Rex was a stunt that he attempted, though immediately hit his elbow after, causing a little embarrassing moment for the actor.
All of the incredible work on the set of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom certainly paid off, as the movie passed $400 million domestically in a box office milestone that makes the Universal franchise the most profitable for the studio. It's also the highest grossing movie of the year that is not helmed by Disney, which has the top three spots with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Incredibles 2. Fallen Kingdom is available now on Digital HD and will be released on Blu-ray on September 18.
